Dear Lagos, you will not turn me into an alcoholic

So a guy called me recently and wanted to meet up on Friday night on a date.

In typical young Lagosian fashion, he wanted to meet up for drinks. (I’m not even important enough for you to feed????)

Anyhow, before I digress, I quickly told the guy that I didn’t drink alcohol anymore. He sounded perplexed.

“So what will you be doing while I’m drinking?”

I told him I could order a chapman or something.

I dunno if oga had other plans but that date was cancelled because it did not sit well with him that I wouldn’t be drunk at the end of the night or at least close to drunk. Oh well, another one bites the dust.

This conversation had me pondering on dating as a whole in Lagos. What more is there for us young people to do in Lagos besides eat, drink and be merry.

Ladies think about it, dating in Lagos (if we can even call it that) either involves the following:

  1. Going over to the guy’s house to watch a movie (because he already bought the DVD and doesn’t believe in wasting NGN2,500 on cinema tickets. iMax tickets are even NGGN3,000).
  2. Actually going to the movies because he is either a movie buff or sucks at making conversation (movies tend to fill up awkward silences).
  3. Trying out new restaurants or old ones.
  4. Afropolitan vibes!!! or any other event happening that weekend

Anyway, I decided to do some research and I found some super cool activities for dates I thought I’d share. Now, the fun part:

  1. Kayaking

Thanks to NothingToDoInLagos this is all the rave now. I like to try new things but if you’re not that adventurous and have an acute fear of water, don’t try it. Find out more about kayaking here

2. Rollerblading

So Ibadanites have a bowling alley and we have…wait for it… a rollerblading rink. You can skate hand in hand with your date, show off your cool skate moves or land on your butt and make a total arse of yourself.

If you’re a newbie, you could both make it a fun, learning experience. The roller blade rink is situated at DCube Roller Skating Rink at Funderland mall. Find out more here.

3. Rock Wall climbing

I hope my future date is reading this and takes me to Funderland. Yes, there are kids climbing the wall as well, just in case you start to feel like an agbaya. But it was so much fun that I tuned out the young uns. Climb till your legs tire out at Trotter and Pop Rock walls, also situated at Funderland.

Location: 16-18, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Between Victoria Garden City (VGC) and Chevron, Opposite Mega Chicken, Beside Zenith Bank, Lagos. (P.S. With a description like this you dare not get lost)

4. Paint-balling

The adrenaline rush is amazing. The best part is that you don’t even need to come with a group of friends. I did this once with a date and the organizers just added us to an existing group. Yeah, we ended up playing with a bunch of strangers but we made new friends. My date and I were on opposing sides which was fun and I was his target for every round. I was sore for days though. Please don’t try any Call of Duty type stunts like I did.

There are so many paint ball arenas to pick from these days:

Ultimate Arena : 82, Basheer Shittu Street, Magodo II, Lagos
Magodo, Lagos, Nigeria

Empire Sports : Elegushi Beach Road, Lagos, Nigeria

and Hardcore Entertainment : Murhi House, Plot 45, Omole Layout, Opposite Big Treat, Omole Junction, Ikeja, Lagos  AND,

Gionni Homes, KM 35 Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lakowe, Lagos

The best part is most of these arenas offer a lot more than paintballing. There are other activities like bull riding, bubble soccer, etc.

5. Go-Karting

The best part about go-karts is that you can pull all the stunts you wouldn’t with your car. Let me quickly add that I have been banned twice from racing at Get Arena for overspeeding. (yikes!).

I think go-karting is fantastic if you’re both competitive and love racing.

Try Get Arena : Plot 6, BIS Way, Off Lekki Expressway, Oniru Estate,  Lagos, OR

Dreamworld Africana: 14 Dreamworld Africana Way, KM 20, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lekki , Lagos (Oh they also have bumper cars if you feel like indulging your inner child)

6. Solve Crime

So there’s a new place in town and it’s called the Escape Room. If you and your date fancy yourself as sleuths and would like to put your tactical and logical skills to the test, then escape into the room.

Escape Room is a live escape game. You and your date maybe are trapped in a room and have to use elements of the room to solve puzzles, mysteries, find clues and escape the room. Sounds like fun?.

Do not try if you are claustrophobic or impatient.

Location: Plot 1573, Oyin Jolayemi Street, Opposite UBA Bank, Victoria Island, Lagos

7. Skating

If you think you’ve perfected your balancing act, test it out on actual wheels. A skating rink just opened up at the remodeled Maryland Mall. They also have hoverboards. Gasp!

Find them here:

Skate City:  1st floor, Maryland Mall 350-360 Ikorodu Road Maryland Ikeja

8. Have a Spa Day

The number of spas in Lagos are on the rise. Still I don’t think you should compromise on quality.

Get a good Swedish massage with scented candles. Get the couples deal even. There are several on DealDey. I can assure you it will either be a bonding experience for you two or increase your sexual tension. You decide.

9. Picnicking

There are several nice picnic spots in Lagos. Sadly the fear of sandflies and mosquito is beyond real. Some of my absolute favorites are:

  • Omu Resort: Omu resort has other side attractions besides their lush green forests. There are wild-life, go-karts, horse riding, quad bikes, archery and many more fun activities.

Location: Bogije Town, a minute drive after Lakowe Lakes Golf Course, Ibeju Lekki, Lagos

  • Lekki Conservation Centre : I had a first date here once. We packed our own food, had fun watching the fishes and climbing the tree house. The canopy walk was also amazing. Just do not wear short shorts as the sandflies are vengeful. At the end of the day, my legs looked like I had the pox.

Location: Km 19 Lagos – Epe Express way, Lekki, Lagos.

(P.S: Lufasi means Lekki Urban Forest Animal Sanctuary Initiative)

Other nice picnic spots are Bics garden in Lekki Phase 1 and Muri Okunola Park on Ozumba Mbadiwe, Victoria Island.

I’ll stop here for now. But I’ll be sure to update this list with more fun date ideas. Ciao.
